We are delighted and proud that one of our senior management team, Professor Huseyin Seker has been appointed as Associate Dean (Research and Enterprise) in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment (CEBE) at Birmingham University.
Birmingham University is one of the UK's leading 'red brick' institutions, and known for academic excellence, making this a prestigious appointment.Professor Seker will will take up the role on Tuesday 15 June.
Professor Seker is currently Professor of Computing Sciences and Associate Dean (Research and Enterprise) within the School of Digital, Technologies and Arts at Staffordshire University.
Prior to this role, he was Director of Enterprise and Engagement for the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Northumbria University, where he also led the University's activities for the Institute of Coding. Professor Seker also spent a period as Faculty Head of Research Operations for the Faculty of Technology at De Montfort University, where he was Faculty Head of Research Students.
He is a research active and enterprise-focused academic who has developed impactful multi-disciplinary research and enterprise projects in digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and data science, with applications in several areas including bio-medicine, genomics, construction and surveying, oil and gas, engineering and finance.
During his career, he has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in journals and conferences. Over the last few years, Professor Seker has specialised in enterprise data analytics and Artificial Intelligence, and led a number of industry projects funded by organisations including InnovateUK.
All of this has played a role in him working with our CEO, Alan Timothy, on the AI-focused project that resulted in Bubo.AI being launched, whilst he was Director of Enterprise and Engagement for the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Northumbria University.
It should also be noted that Professor Seker is one of the founding members of the UK's flagship Institute of Coding (IoC) project, a £40 million initiative funded by the Office for Students (OfS).
He has recently been awarded a multi-disciplinary EU Erasmus+ project: 'Digitizing Architectural Restoration Education through Virtual Reality', which he will deliver through a close collaboration between the schools of Computing and Digital Technology, and Engineering and the Built Environment, as well as overseas partners in Turkey and Italy from June.
